Weddington takes its name from Weddington Methodist Church, founded in 1824 as Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church and renamed for local benefactor Reuben B. Weddington; residents incorporated the town on May 2, 1983, as possible annexation by Charlotte loomed.
