Wadesboro, North Carolina

The Anson County seat was founded in 1783 as New Town and renamed in 1787 for Revolutionary War colonel Thomas Wade. In 1900 astronomers judged it the best place in North America to view a total solar eclipse, and the Smithsonian sent railroad cars of equipment to observe it.
