Established by an act of the North Carolina legislature in 1789 as the Iredell County seat, Statesville is home to Mitchell Community College, founded in 1852 as a Presbyterian women's college. The site of Fort Dobbs, a French and Indian War frontier fort, is preserved as a state historic site nearby.
