Rock Hill, South Carolina

York County's largest city began in 1852 as a depot on the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad, took its name from a small flinty knoll noted by the railroad's builders, and was incorporated in 1870. The February 1961 ‘Friendship Nine’ lunch-counter sit-in drew national attention, and the city is home to Winthrop University (founded 1886) and Clinton College.
