Lowell, North Carolina

Incorporated in 1879 and named for Lowell, Massachusetts, in hopes it would become a similar textile center, Lowell traces its settlement to the Woodlawn Mill, built in 1848 on the South Fork Catawba River, which forms the town's northern border.
