“Red Rose City”

Lancaster, South Carolina

Originally called Barnetsville, the Lancaster County seat was incorporated in 1830; architect Robert Mills designed its jail (1823) and courthouse (1828), the latter now a National Historic Landmark. The city claims the red rose of England's House of Lancaster as its emblem and hosts a Red Rose Festival.
