Fort Mill takes its name from a colonial fort that was requested but never built and a gristmill on Steele Creek; chartered in 1873, it became a textile town whose mill joined Springs Cotton Mills in 1931. Now a Charlotte suburb, it is home to Domtar's headquarters and part of the Carowinds amusement park.
