Bessemer City, North Carolina

Founded in 1893 near an iron furnace and named for Sir Henry Bessemer, creator of the Bessemer process, the city turned to textile mills after its early iron-smelting industry became obsolete; it lies about 6 miles northwest of Gastonia.
